The process of enchanting requires ingredients made by destroying or “disenchanting” uncommon (or better) weapons and armour that you find. Destroying the item itself in the process.

Finding some nice green loot, and then destroying it for some dust or shards can seem like a wrench at first, but there are some very big benefits to it.

As Warcraft has matured, many lower level green items, and even some blue, are not fetching a decent gold price at the auction house. In fact you may find that the ingredients that your greens disenchants into are actually worth more than the greens themselves.

Another major advantage is that high level, every player looks to “buff” his or her equipment with the very best and most expensive enchantments in every item slot. Undoubtedly this will be the case with Enchanting 525 Illustrious as well.

So yes, it is an expensive profession, but it has big rewards once you have reached a high enough level.

With two options for most loot at low level (sell the item itself, or the ingredients it disenchants into) it all seems good. So I have to mention one massive ongoing cost, perhaps the biggest cost in the game.

The enchanters rod is perhaps the most expensive “tool” currently in the game. In fact on some servers it might possibly be the most expensive item in the game, easily costing more than Epic flying mounts.

The reason for this is, at each level of advancement, the enchanters tool or “rod” needs upgrading. From a simple copper tube to begin with, to a Titanium based rod with some very expensive reagents in by the time you reach level 450. Each upgrade also requires that the previous rod is “destroyed” in the process, meaning that by the time you max out this profession you may have spent around 10,000g gold on the rod alone. How much will the Enchanting 525 Illustrious rod cost?

So is it all worth it? My answer is a resounding “yes”. At the highest level you can charge a lot very enchants, on some severs single enchants fetch over 1000g, and everyone wants to keep every item they have fully up to date. So every time someone picks up a new epic in an instance, they are going to be looking for someone to “buff” it. It never ends.

To sum up, enchanting may not be ideal for new players or first characters, but is a great money spinner for experienced Warcraft players. est of luck to Enchanting 525 Illustrious.

Blacksmith’s primary product is plate armour, and as luck would have it, this is worn by the two most equipment dependant classes of Warrior and Paladin. This, in turn, should make this armour type very popular.

When Warcraf was originally released there were a glut of Warriors and Paladins taking the dual professions of Blacksmithing with Mining. In this way they hoped to gain some self sufficiency as far as equipment went. Blacksmithing was very popular. Will this still be the case with Cataclysm and Illustrious 525 Blacksmithing?

However, as more instances were added to the end game, it became apparent that the armour you could craft with your profession was inferior to the end game instance drops, and Blacksmithing slowly lost it’s popularity.

It was initially suspected that Blizzard would compensate by having a range of BoP recipes drop to keep some sort of balance between crafted and looted items. While there were a few of these, there were no-where near enough to keep the profession viable as a producer of equipment for high end instances

Each expansion pack increases the demand for the high end Blacksmithing items for a short period of time (perhaps 6 to 12 weeks after the expansion pack’s release) and then interest decreases as the majority of players level up and begin to loot the newer high end instances.

Blizzard, the developers, have been asked about this in the past. It seemed a little unfair as other professions such as Alchemy and Enchanting have a market that is always viable for players no matter what their characters level and performance. But nothing has really changed. Most of the new recipes make items that are BoP themselves, and therefore can only be used by the character that crafts it.

In short, blacksmithing is a strange profession. Having value at the high end for only 20% of each expansion’s life cycle, but retaining some usefulness to those still in the levelling process throughout the game.

The best advice is – if you currently have a Blacksmith at 450 – level them like crazy once Cataclysm arrives, then make the most of the new end game profession items for as long as they last, then quickly switch down to make armour for players levelling up new Worgen or Goblin characters.

Up until this, you had to ply the trade channel and enchant other players items directly using the trade GUI between characters. Selling one high end enchant might involve spending hours spamming the trade channel for a buyer.

Inscription bought with it “vellums” on which you can put your enchants which can then be marketed at the auction house like any other item. Thank goodness. Enchanting 525 Illustrious will bring yet more changes.

Inscription, therefore, might seem a decent second choice for a profession. Allowing you to make your own “media” as it were. Patch 3.2 has made inscription a very decent choice all round, adding some very desirable crafted items to this profession.

Not that I would advise having two crafting professions, especially for a first character. This is a very expensive way to play, and you may well spend most of your time grinding mobs for cloth or decent greens or blues to sell on.

It is best to analyse the market before making a decision on which enchants to make. Checking which particular items are in demand and which are overstocked.

Next I compare this with the materials I have at hand and the cost of some of the ingredients and reagents currently also at the auction house.

I have, in the past, been able to buy nearly all the items I need to make my ‘chant, and sell at a healthy profit. But most of the time I need to farm or source some things for myself.

If this is not the case, then I see what’s in short supply, and consider sending out a character with two gathering professions to get what you need. Remember to level these up to, It’s not just Enchanting that needs to be level 525 Illustrious.

It may still come down to disenchanting high level items though. As you reach the highest level these will be rare “blues” and sometimes even epic “purples”. One idea is to ask a guild mate with a high level crafting profession such as blacksmithing, to make items from the material you farm with the specific intent of just disenchanting them straight away.

It’s not the simplest route, but enchanting may well be the most rewarding. Speed on to Enchanting 252 Illustrious.

As is often the case, the developers are keeping a lot back before the release, but what we have been told so far seems to suggest there will be a new axiom added to the professions mix with Archaeology providing some interesting choices for the budding crafter.

It seems that the new secondary profession of archaeology will introduce optional reagents into the mix which alter the buffs of the weapons and armour that you can make. Giving you some interesting choices along the way.

This simple change is actually quite a radical departure for Blizzard. It means that level 525 Illustrious blacksmiths will have a far greater choice in the usability of the pieces they craft, perhaps allowing items to be tailored to be used by different classes dependant on the buffs etc.. We will have to wait and see.

This benefits developers of course. It means that one graphic model requires little or no change to be used for many different weapon and armour types, while still fitting the logical structure of the game. I would rather see many more items, allowing far greater customization of look and appearance, but this seems to suggest that will not happen.

Another is that the developers have hinted that professions will be more interdependent than before. What this means is that to craft items with one profession will require pre-crafted items from another (similar to the way Blacksmith’s make the rods that Enchanters need now)

Expect a hard fought race as characters rush to reach level 525 illustrious Blacksmithing. It is likely that the high end items that come as standard with the profession will only have a great demand for a short period of time before other characters replace them with superior loot from the new instances that Cataclysm will bring. Levelling up your support professions such as Mining may well be wise. Early after Cataclysm hits, the new ores it will bring will be extremely expensive, meaning little or no profit for those looking to buy ingredients for their crafting profession at the auction house.

Personally, I hope Blacksmithing is given a boost this time. Wrath of the Lich King introduced a Grand Master tier that was full of holes. There was not an really adequate weapon for tank warriors, and given how many warriors are also blacksmiths, this really was not ideal. I hope for a fuller range of weapons and armour this time. After all, we only have a small window of opportunity to sell our wares before everyone is looting better from instances.

With Cataclysm bringing in many changes to the profession I think we can all look forward to the reaching Illustrious level 525 Blacksmithing

Here are my top 3 tips for making sure you are ready to make the most of your profession as soon as the Cataclysm hits.

1 – Collect some of the current high level ores. Saronite and Titanium will almost definitely be required for the first few levelling points of the Blacksmithing profession between 450 and 525. Look out for players off-loading this ore over the coming months as they are likely to suspect they will soon be almost redundant.

However, the first 10 or 20 items you craft to get to perhaps 440 or 445 will more than likely need a great amount of the existing minerals. You will get a head start in the race to 525 Blacksmithing and Illustrious this way.

2 – Level quickly to 85. The biggest issue if gathering the new minerals is your aim, will be having a powerful enough character to safely navigate the areas where the minerals are if you are a miner, or collect all the rare recipes if you are not.

3 – Mine! Simple as that. Your Blacksmith, or another character needs to be able to mine at the highest level. If you don’t have a miner, level one up quickly. Paying for your material will be financially crippling, especially in the first month or two after Cataclysm.

After Wrath of the Lich King hit the stores, there was a period where Saronite cost well over 100 gold per stack, far more in some areas. It now fetches under 30g almost everywhere, which is barely more than you get selling it straight to vendors.

The items a fully levelled Blacksmith craft will fetch the best prices for a relatively short time after the expansion. You don’t want to compromise your profit by having to pay massively over the odds prices for your raw materials.

So if getting to level 525 and gaining the Illustrious level is your aim, then getting your character prepared will really help.
