So you want to get to level 525 Illustrious with you Blacksmith? I recommend a little preparation prior to Cataclysm arriving this Fall. You’ll need a character already levelled to 450 to take advantage of the new opportunities.

Here are my top 3 tips for making sure you are ready to make the most of your profession as soon as the Cataclysm hits.

1 – Collect some of the current high level ores. Saronite and Titanium will almost definitely be required for the first few levelling points of the Blacksmithing profession between 450 and 525. Look out for players off-loading this ore over the coming months as they are likely to suspect they will soon be almost redundant.

However, the first 10 or 20 items you craft to get to perhaps 440 or 445 will more than likely need a great amount of the existing minerals. You will get a head start in the race to 525 Blacksmithing and Illustrious this way.

2 – Level quickly to 85. The biggest issue if gathering the new minerals is your aim, will be having a powerful enough character to safely navigate the areas where the minerals are if you are a miner, or collect all the rare recipes if you are not.

3 – Mine! Simple as that. Your Blacksmith, or another character needs to be able to mine at the highest level. If you don’t have a miner, level one up quickly. Paying for your material will be financially crippling, especially in the first month or two after Cataclysm.

After Wrath of the Lich King hit the stores, there was a period where Saronite cost well over 100 gold per stack, far more in some areas. It now fetches under 30g almost everywhere, which is barely more than you get selling it straight to vendors.

The items a fully levelled Blacksmith craft will fetch the best prices for a relatively short time after the expansion. You don’t want to compromise your profit by having to pay massively over the odds prices for your raw materials.

So if getting to level 525 and gaining the Illustrious level is your aim, then getting your character prepared will really help.
