Are you getting a screen freeze up problem on your Xbox 360? Is your Xbox giving you no clue as to the source of the difficulty? In other words, is there an absence of error messages or red lights flashing on your Xbox?

If this describes your situation, then give the following troubleshooting tips a try:

1.) Is there an accessory that’s to blame for the freeze up? The idea is to disconnect every one of the accessories. This also includes the hard drive on the console. If after removing the accessories, your screen still freezes up, then you will have to look elsewhere for the problem.

If the difficulty clears up after you’ve removed the accessories, reconnect each accessory one at a time until the problem returns. This process will tell you which accessory is the cause of the freeze up.

If it’s the hard drive, the hard drive cache should be cleared. Go to http: // support.microsoft.com/kb/971755/ for further information.

2.) Are you using a disc that is dirty, scratched, or do you have a game disc that has known problems? When you clean your discs, do it with a cloth made of a nonabrasive material. Don’t use paper towels.

Paper has abrasives and can scratch your disc. Scratches are detected by holding the disc at an angle next to a light source.

3.) Do you run your Xbox too hot? Heat can induce screen freezes. You should only use your console in a cool and dry environment.

Make sure there is adequate ventilation. Therefore you can’t use the console in an enclosed cabinet or in an area full of clutter or that is closed off.

Keep the cooling vents free from obstructions and dust. Be aware of the vent locations and make sure there’s no obstructions blocking the vents. Placing the console on soft surfaces can reduce the air flow into the vents. Don’t place the power brick on any surface that is soft or shaggy.

Keep the Xbox away from any sources of heat. This also means direct exposure to the sun. Maintaining your Xbox at a cool temperature is not an option. The cooling system is barely adequate so the console can easily overheat.

Try to limit the number of hours of continuous gaming. Restrict your game sessions to three hours. The warmer the operational environment is, the shorter the game session should be.
