Of all of the video games from the Golden Age, Frogger has remained extremely popular and very influential. Back in the day you could walk into any arcade and find Asteroids, Qbert, and Pacman games right in line with the Frogger game. Due to the popularity of the game, still today, many different sequels of the game have been produced.
Sega/Gremlin began distributing the Frogger game in 1981. Konami, a Japanese video game developer, developed Frogger and it turned into their very first huge hit. The gaming generation of modern times has embraced the game and is thankful that, nearly three decades in the future, quarters are not necessary to play any longer.
Playing the Game
Many people believe that the success of this game is due to how simple it is to operate. The storyline is simple and the characters are not complex in the least. The characters are simply frogs. They are taking on the challenge that has been fought by the chicken and are trying to safely reach the other side of the road. The objective is to maneuver the frog across a busy obstacle course and get them to the other side without them being run over.
Three, five, or seven frogs are given to the player in the beginning, each representing one life chance. The frogs are waiting patiently at the bottom of the screen as the game begins. In order to be successful, the player must get the frogs across a very busy roadway. The road has many different vehicles in place that include buses, dune buggies, trucks, taxis, cars, bulldozers, motorcycles, and vans. As they travel horizontally across the screen, each lane of vehicles is traveling at random speeds and in different directions.
Beyond the highway lanes, there is also a river that contains logs, crocodiles and turtles, again moving across the screen. If the frogs can hop from log to log or on the backs of the turtles without being eaten by a crock or falling into the water, then he will reach his home. There are five different frog homes or lily pads located at the very top of the screen. To make things even more challenging, every level is timed, so the player must reach his destination before the time elapses or he loses a life. A player can also get bonuses for catching bugs in the river or escorting a lady frog across.
How to Win?
Once the player has gotten all five frogs to the top of the screen and safely into a lily pad the game moves on to the next, more challenging, level. As the game progresses, the all objects move faster and the chances of being swept into the water or under a bus become even more likely.
As for the controls, there is only one way to control the frogs and that is the joystick. Each time a player moves it in one of the four directions, the frog hops once.
